March 26, 1945 Iwo Jima was officially declared secure. - The last gasp of the defenders was a banzai charge on the night of the 26th against the Army Air Corps’ newly arrived 21st Fighter Group, killing 44 and wounding 88. - The Army’s 147th Infantry Regiment remained on Iwo and worked to root out the holdouts for the next several months.
