May 24, 2022 · Even though it is a noble metal, silver will corrode in ambient atmospheres, predominantly by reacting with sulfur-containing gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbonyl sulfide (OCS) to form the silver sulfide (Ag2S) acanthite.
Silver sulfide is the major product of silver corrosion in atmosphere containing sulfuric gases, such as H2S, OCS, CS2, and SO2. Corrosive effect on silver of H2S and OCS gases is about an order of magnitude stronger than that of CS2 and SO2.
