Driving around in your boat, pulling a shad trawl behind may not be work, but you don't have it in the boat, either. The shad can't swim out of the net because the water going through the net pushes the shad to the back of the net and holds it there.

I have caught shad and skipjack in it once I figured it out you have to run it out about 75ft. behind the boat and run around 5mph. in a large circle. I added some weight to the rope about 20ft in front of the trawl to get it down deeper.

2007年11月8日 · I believe with the trawl net you have to find a school of shad flipping on the surface. You put the net out and then steer an arc so the net goes through the middle of the school. You may get a gazillion and one shad, but by the time you get it to the boat you may only have a dozen. They are only good in deep, open water.

2009年4月5日 · I bought one last summer, but have never tried to use it. The older I get, the more my bum shoulder seems to act up. After half a dozen good tosses with a throw net, I'm done. Not a problem when baits easy to find, one or two good cast and you have all the bait you need. When bait is scarce and you get 2 or 3 shad per toss it's a killer.

2010年7月19日 · The main reason I am investigating the whole issue is for those times when schools of shad are difficult to find. My thoughts were that if I pulled a trawl while hunting for shad, I could find enough bait to fish. When I am catching 1-3" shad I will three to four on a hook (dead). So I can go through 100 shad relatively quick.

2007年10月4日 · Best bet is finding the shad and throwing a cast net, or if your state allows it in the body of water you fish, setting a gill net. Sounds like the shad trawl you're mentioning is just trolling blindly. I see you fish the James and Buggs, if you fish the tidal James - then you're allowed to use a gill net with permit. The gill net makes it so easy.

You can looking them up on Memphis Net & Twine website. Dirtdobber, you can buy a 36" hoop with netting for around $40.
