I have good practice routines for all but speaking. Often when I speak to people in German I get embarrassed and nervous and can’t remember anything near what I’d be able to write.

People who grew up speaking mostly dialect might make small "mistakes" in standard German, which in their home region probably will not bother others too much. For example, my parents grew up speaking lower German, so they still use "nach" instead of "zu" quite often. What you consider a prescriptive rule is just a description to how it is done.

I agree with germanfinder above: In German it's a big compliment to say "kann man essen", just like the Canadian English equivalent. However, it's definitely an informal phrase and takes for granted that the people talking to each other are at least acquaintances.

2021年6月30日 · Nowadays, I think the most common are "Mama/Papa"; referring to them directly in dialogue (talking to them) with "Vater/Mutter" gives a bit of an uncomfortable/distant aristocracy/rich people vibe.
