How do you fill in (plug) holes in cast iron to get good results?
2011年7月29日 · If they are on a painted surface, fill with epoxy and paint over them. If they are on a platen or table, filling them with a braze rod will work, but will be noticeable. Filling them with nickle rod will be a real PITA to get flat and may ruin the surface unless you can run them through a surface grinder.

2011年7月28日 · Cut off the screw appropiately. Drill a new hole where it's supposed to be and tap as needed, even if the new hole is half-way into the old one. Larger holes get the same treatment, ream to size, then install a plug or bushing, using LocTite, then make a new hole. I've used this exact procedure several times while building model engines.

There are consumables, high in nickel, for welding cast iron. You could drill them out for the biggest thread you could fit in there, thread a bolt in and loctite it in and then flush cut it, then drill the correct places and sizes. Tig welder or oxyfuel torch and silicon bronze filler rod. Repaired a lot of cast iron that way.

2011年10月29日 · clean it, pour aluminum down the hole. You're making a sealed hole, but, even if it leaks a little, carbon will plug it. Alternatively, heat the iron to 400 degrees (not glowing), and use stainless wire in your mig - or feed stainless rod in with the mig, you need nickel to keep the weld from cracking later.
