The ES44DC and ES44AC, commonly called GEVOs for General Electric Evolution series, were designed to meet the stricter diesel locomotive emissions standards imposed by the EPA Tier II regulations. To meet the new standards, GE developed the 12-cylinder GEVO 12 engine.
Powered by the GEVO 12 prime mover rated at 4,400 horsepower, the ES44 has a very similar appearance to the predecessor Dash 9 series. The most distinct spotting feature is the larger and thicker radiator section. With 15 years of production and customer options, there are notable variations and detail differences.
