It offered the greatest output ever cataloged by EMD in its four-axle line, capable of producing a hefty 3,800 horsepower. The demonstrators also featured the same aerodynamic touches as their 12-cylinder counterparts.

EMD 5 GP60 Demo at Lowell (Everett). EMD's GP60 demos handle Santa Fe's hot 199 train, shown here crossing Tehachapi Creek at the east end of Woodford siding. These demos did their job well, as Santa Fe later purchased 126 production model GP60s in conventional cab, cabless and North American safety cab configurations.

EMDs GP60 Demonstrators #5, 6 & 7 were the first to feature micro-processor controls. The new third-generation model was delivered in three variations: Standard cab GP60 (294 built), cab-less GP60B (23-built) and safety cab GP60M (63 built). Feb 12, 2024 · Almost 400 GP60 variations were built from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s ranging from standard cabs to comfort cabs, and a handful made with no cabs at all! EMD constructed three demonstrators with rounded cab edges for reduced wind drag and spec’ed out with Southern Pacific options including a full light package up front.
