2023年5月8日 · Hello there! I am a first time DM (for DnD at least) and I have heard that the Beholder is a strong enemy for players to fight. However I saw that the zombie beholder was relatively weaker compared to it. My 5 players are level 5 right now but I plan for them to be level 8 when they face him, is this too low of a level?

The basic Beholder is a CR 13, with the Death Tyrant being a slightly more powerful version at CR 14, the Beholder Zombie a much weaker version at CR 5, and the Spectator bringing up the rear at CR 3.

I agree that you could just remove the instakill effect and still use the zombie beholder. It's still a dangerous foe without the anti-fun bullshit.

The list of monster pairs like what you're looking for is very short, and reverse-engineering the differences might be more hassle than it's worth. I recommend an alternative that I've used for the same goal of creating zombie and skeleton versions of arbitrary monsters.
