The disaster that took place at Koniggratz during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 finally removed Austria from the helm of central Europe and it remained at the fringes of events until the First World War. The uniforms of the Austrian Army, illustrated here by Ottenfeld, remained much the same after 1815.

The rank insignia – so-called Paroli – of the Austro-Hungarian Army (1867–1918) were worn on the fore-part of the sleeves for jackets, but never on shoulder straps of shirts, service jackets, and dress uniforms. This extended to the Common Army as well as to the Imperial-Royal Landwehr.

Before 1867 all Austrian and Hungarian infantry wore a white tunic with light blue trousers; piping, cuffs, and collar being of the distinctive regimental colors which were matched with yellow or white metal buttons for regimental identification.
