Here's what I did last time: I rented a Lowe's pickup for $20, loaded 5 sheets of 3/4" MDF, drove it home, unloaded it, drove the truck back, all in an hour.

Sep 24, 2003 · MDF is just finer particles than particle board. Either should be fine. You should probably go with 1" thick (or glue up two 1/2" pieces) for strength unless it's not going to get traffic. OSB (Oriented Strand Board) could also be a good choice to save money. It's commonly used as a roof underlayment or wall sheathing.

In addition to the smell, MDF will also absorb any moisture from the air over time so I applied two coats of primer/sealer the interiors of my ported Tempest and my LCC to deal with the odor and to minimize any moisture absorption Once the primer was completely dried there was no more smell.

How would I completely roundover an edge of 3/4" MDF?
Jun 4, 2001 · Eric Kahn. there are 3/4 roundover router bits availible, you just need to find the store that has one, you would want one with a pilot bearing and then screw the piece you want to round over to another piece that has been cut out as a guide plate for the pilot bearing. or use a circle attachment on the router. Jul 19, 2002 · One half longer and narrower (2' x 6'), the other half shorter and wider (4'x3'). Those dimensions are rough guesses, I can't measure it right now. On the underside of the out side edge, all the way around (about 4" deep) we doubled the MDF up to 1.5" thick. Then 4 or 5 places around the desk we made it 1.5" thick across the desk.

Since rigidity increases with the cube of thickness, MDF must be ~1.125" thick to match the plywood's stiffness, though due to its higher density has a better damping factor (Q).

Typically, I use size "0" or "10", depending on the thickness of the MDF and the stress on the joint. The fact that there is no grain structure is actually why biscuits are preferred--- fasteners, like screws, won't hold nearly as well.

Oct 12, 2003 · 9. I see everyone just glues their MDF for speaker projects. I have a pneumatic narrow crown stapler that really holds wood together almost as good as screws. The staples are about 5/32" wide and I have 1 1/2" long staples. The surface wound is very minimul and depending on air pressure, usually goes below the surface, leaving a tiny spot to fill.

This means that red oak is approximately 3 times stronger than MDF. When oak is glued to MDF it makes a very desirable baffle. The baffle becomes incredibly strong (oak) and dead (MDF).
