In 1965, 100 years after the Civil War, Maryland's State Forest & Park Service began the creation of Point Lookout State Park, comprising 1,046 acres. In the Park's Visitor Center there are exhibits which tell the Civil War story.

The 2 big historic attractions are only open once a month anyway and one of them (the museum) can only be accessed through the coded gate within the campground. Imagine traveling a distance to visit these historic places ( lighthouse as well) and finding out they are closed or not easily accessed. Point Lookout never again for our family!

Open daily 7 a.m - sunset (May through September) or 8 a.m. - sunset (October through April). Special weekend hours (6 a.m. - Sunset) apply for weekends/holidays between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Limited parking is available near the entrance of the beach picnic area. The beach area has grills, picnic tables and a playground.

The point's rich Civil War history is found at Fort Lincoln and at the Point Lookout Civil War Museum. The museum is open May through October, on Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM - 5 PM. Occasionally fills to capacity on summer and holiday weekends.
