Lightning is shown consistently to come in second behind The King and only ever passes him when Chick cheats. If Chick never tried to crash Lightning The King would most likely have won both races even though there wouldn't have been a second if The King won the first. Chick's cheating always seems to have the opposite of the desired effect.
