Lake Duluth - Wikipedia
Lake Duluth was a proglacial lake that formed in the Lake Superior drainage basin as the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreated. [1] The oldest existing shorelines were formed after retreat from the Greatlakean advance (previously called the Valders), sometime around 11,000 years B.P. Lake Duluth formed at the western end of the Lake Superior basin.

Glacial Lake Duluth partly filled the Lake Superior basin in front of the Superior lobe. The largest lake, glacial Lake Agassiz, formed in the Red River lowland in northwestern Minnesota. At its maximum, glacial Lake Agassiz covered over 300,000 square kilometers across northern Minnesota, Manitoba, and Ontario.

Even the higher glacial levels of Lake Superior are evident in the beach sand deposits and and eroded notches found along the escarpment. In fact, Skyline Parkway roughly follows one of the highest stands of the lake called the Glacial Lake Duluth level.
