I have learnt hiragana, katakana and some simple kanji (i.e. weekdays, school, water, time, placement etc.) but I am struggling with learning the grammar and sentence structures as well as what words I should be learning.

I live in nyc so i am able to find many in-person Japanese classes. I think this could be fun because it will allow me to socialize a bit with people who are also learning Japanese.

2020年5月16日 · TL;DR: I've done too much damn research on the best way to learn Japanese instead of just starting. A month ago I finally found a great combination of resources and am making a ton of progress. The 4 main resources are WaniKani (to learn Kanji), Memrise (to learn vocab), Anki (to solidify the vocab you've learned), and Genki (to learn grammar).
Are there any apps that actually teach you Japanese?
My personal preference for Japanese learning was always the Japanese From Zero books, though. The author, George, just explains the grammar in a way that clicked with me very quickly. 5 books, as brilliant as they are, only gets you so far, so the use of Bunpro and reading native material was always a good next step.

2021年8月6日 · Genki was probably the best way to learn Japanese at one point which I guess is why it still gets recommended. But it seems like even the fraction of people who finish both books aren't left with much ability to use/consume the language.
