The suggested donations are given at the kiosk but if you want to go into the shop or the cafe it is possible to do just that without giving a donation. £7.50 or £6.50 for seniors does not seem too bad as it is possible to join a group with a very informed guide who will answer any questions as well as giving the regular tour. Also for the price of the donation, you can spend as long as you wish in the cathedral.

You don't have to go outside on the balcony unless you want to. I don't like heights either, but I'm up there every week.
